About the Event
The Mount Sandel Mesolithic site in Coleraine, is one of the oldest archaeological sites in Ireland and dates back to 7,000BC.
Derry city was founded by Saint Columbcille/Columba in the 6th century. Derry is an Anglicization of the Irish name Daire or Doire meaning "oak grove". It was the last walled city built in Ireland and the only city on the island whose ancient walls survive complete.
In 1613, during the plantation of Ulster, Derry was renamed Londonderry having been granted to London merchants.
The siege of Derry took place in 1689 after the Apprentice Boys barricaded the city and refused entry to Catholic King James 11 and his forces. This was a precursor to the Battle of the Boyne in 1690.
